To plumb there for an elusive sense/ Of mystical attunement/
Through some tangibility/ Of word or sound.
MY MIND CHURNS THROUGH/ ITS SNAPSHOT IMAGES/
AND I REMEMBER/ STROLLING DOWN AN AVENUE/
OF THEATRES AND CAFES/ LATE LAST AUTUMN.
SUDDENLY I'D FELT/ LIKE DUCKING INTO LIBRARIE L'ESOTERIQUE/ A MONTREAL/WHERE I PICKED A BOOK/ AS IF IT WERE A TAROT/ FROM A DECK CONTAINING HALF A MILLION CARDS./
STARK SCENES OF EARTHQUAKES FLICKERED/
IN A HALL OF MIRRORS./ CITIES WHERE I KNEW GOOD PEOPLE/
SHOOK APART/ WHILE RIVERS LEAPED THEIR BANKS./
A CITY BY THE SEA/ SANK LIKE A DREAM OF DUST/
AS TIDAL WAVES RUSHED IN/ TO FILL THE SHATTERED SPACE.
 
My cup of herb tea/ Warms my blood with spice/As memories flicker/
And a yearning in my heart/ Is fire leaping through/ The cooling coils/
Of my all too mathematic mind. My bones are aching/
Like the leafless limbs/ That reach out of the desolated earth/
To plead for yet another spring./The skeleton of Destiny/
is robed in razor ice mandalas/
Dancing on the crests of moon dust/ While cold light glances/
Off his silver blades./ And ancient devils whisper/ At my back:/
"Beware of fatal mirrors./All who would be holy/
First/Must meet us on the killing ground."/
And still my pen is moving/ On the silent page/
That shimmers like a sea/ Amidst the solid spaces./
Here within me faint beginnings/ Of my real voice/
